Megaupload

One of the biggest file-sharing website MegaUpload.com has been taken down by the US federal officials. Several domains and data centers were seized that were hosting the sites.

The website went down just after the coordinated protest of SOPA/PIPA across the internet by several websites such as Wikipedia and Reddit. Founder Kim Schmitz aka Kim Dotcom was arrested along with three others in New Zealand on Thursday at the request of US officials. Other three includes Ortmann, Megaupload.com chief marketing officer Finn Batao, and developer Bram van der Kolk were arrested in New Zealand today.

They are being accused with conspiracy to commit racketeering, conspiracy to commit copyright infringement, conspiracy to commit money laundering and with criminal copyright infringement.

The US officials also grabbed assets of $50 million and seized bank accounts belonging to the company and its employees. The sites for MegaUpload are still unavailable and had not been redirected yet.

The US Senate and the US House of Representatives have announced that the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the Protect IP Act (PIPA) have been delayed for votes.

MegaUpload Founder and its employees may have to until Wednesday since the North Shore District Court scheduled a hearing to decide whether Kim Dotcom and three others should be granted bail or not.

FileSonic has disabled its file sharing services. Now FileSonic allows upload and retrieve files only that you have uploaded personally.

Today Kim Dotcom has been freed on bail in a surprise move, after a New Zealand judge dismissed fears he would flee the country to escape US online piracy charges.

Dotcom’s lawyer Paul Davison said his client remained determined to fight US allegations that he masterminded “massive worldwide online piracy” through file-sharing webite Megaupload and associated sites.
